DIY LEGO travel kit: Ideas for on the go, long-distance travels
Share
Whether you’re travelling by plane, train or automobile, long-distance journeys call for entertainment. Our favourite kind? DIY LEGO travel kits and activities, of course!
Keeping everyone – yourself included – entertained during long-distance travel can be a challenge. Packing a few LEGO bricks, though, is such a great idea to turn even the most tedious travel leg into a creative adventure.
Wait… Can you bring LEGO on a plane?
Yep! LEGO bricks and sets are generally allowed in both carry-on and checked luggage – however, we recommend packing your travel LEGO kit in a sturdy, sealable container to avoid losing any pieces during the journey.
For those concerned about airport security, rest assured that LEGO bricks typically don’t cause any issues during the screening process. Just be mindful of the noise factor when building on the plane – opt for a small, quiet project to ensure a pleasant flight for both you and your fellow passengers.
LEGO travel kits and activities for your next trip
With that important question answered, here are some of our favourite ways to incorporate LEGO play into your travel routine.
DIY portable LEGO kits
Prepare a small, portable LEGO kit before you hit the road. Choose a sturdy, compartmentalised container to store a variety of parts, from basic bricks like your LEGO baseplate to Minifigures and wheels. These compact sets may be a bit smaller, but they’re packed with big, awesome possibilities – a fun idea perfect for creating on-the-go kits without taking up much space.
Pro tip: Before your big trip, visit our Coopers Plains showroom and fill a bag with a selection of pre-loved and new LEGO parts. (Or, check out our LEGO collection online!) But don’t play with them until your trip begins!
This sandwich container with a “built-in” LEGO board or pencil box travel LEGO kits are such a fantastic idea for small, easy-to-clean setup to keep your toddler (or any of your young builders!) excited and occupied in the car or plane! Plus, the materials for these LEGO activity cases are very inexpensive and easy to find in your local dollar store.
Try creative build challenges
Turn travel time into a fun competition with themed build challenges. Set a timer and see who can create the most unique structure or vehicle in 10 minutes. If you’re on a road trip or a beach trip, base the challenges on the scenery outside – build a mountain range, a city skyline, or a boat to cross an imaginary river. This is an excellent way to stimulate creativity while making the journey more enjoyable.
Tell your travel stories through LEGO builds
Use your LEGO Minifigures and bricks to craft stories as you travel. Each person can add to the narrative, building scenes or characters along the way. This kind of collaborative play is perfect for long flights or train rides, where time can drag without engaging activities. Plus, it’s a great way to introduce younger travellers to the imaginative world of LEGO play.
Travel-themed creations
Encourage kids and adults to build models inspired by the places you’re visiting. Heading to the beach? Create a LEGO sandcastle or surfboard. Exploring a new city? Design your own LEGO skyscraper or bridge. These creations can be a fun keepsake from your trip, and a great way to connect with your surroundings.
On-the-go sorting and organizing
For those who enjoy the more methodical side of LEGO play, take advantage of your long journey to sort and organize your LEGO parts. Bring a small sorting tray and categorize pieces by colour, size, or type. It’s a calming activity that can make your next building session more efficient.
Now, go forth and create. And if you do, take photos and videos of the progress (you could even make a fun stop-motion video) and be sure to tag us @brickresales or email support@brickresales.com.au. Safe travels and happy building!
