The best LEGO Star Wars spaceships – and how to build your own

Here at BrickResales, we’re all about celebrating the creativity, nostalgia and fun that LEGO gives us – especially during Star Wars month. Whether you’re an Original Trilogy purist, a Clone Wars enthusiast or you just love a good spaceship, this is the blog post for you.

We’ve asked our community to tell us the best LEGO Star Wars starfighter sets and shared our expert tips for building your own custom ships and dioramas. Read on…

The best LEGO Star Wars Starfighters (according to you!)

We asked, you answered. Here’s a rundown of the best LEGO Star Wars ships, as chosen by our BrickResales community:

Chuck’s Fondor Haulcraft
  • Republic Gunship: A Clone Wars-era favourite, this gunship is beloved for its chunky, dramatic design and troop-carrying capacity.
    Brenden’s pick.
  • TIE Defender: A high-performance, multi-role Imperial fighter, the Defender is a standout for its tri-wing structure and advanced features.
    Also Brenden’s top choice.
  • A-Wing: Sleek, speedy and compact, the A-Wing ships are a Rebel classic.
    Steff’s pick.
  • Slave I / Boba Fett’s Starship: This fan-favourite bounty hunter ship has multiple LEGO iterations and remains one of the most distinctive silhouettes of all Star Wars spaceships.
    Myles and Mark’s picks.
  • Red Five X-Wing Starfighter: Arguably the most iconic ship in the galaxy, this set (10240) is part of the Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) and makes a beautiful display piece.
    Gratten’s pick.
  • Dash Rendar’s Outrider: A lesser known but much-loved ship from the Expanded Universe, even though it hasn’t officially been released by LEGO. It’s perfect for MOC builders.
    Steff’s pick.
  • Fondor Haulcraft: Another unofficial MOC, this newer fan-favourite from Andor has been brought to life through by LEGO builder 2Bricks.
    Chuck’s pick.

How to build your own LEGO Star Wars spaceships

Can’t find the spaceship you want, or looking to build something completely unique? That’s where MOCs (My Own Creations) come in – and at BrickResales, we’ve got all the parts you need.

We’ve also got plenty of expert tips to refer back to. Check out this guide to perfecting your LEGO MOCs that we shared a few years ago, with the help of three expert LEGO Star Wars builders.

Our top tips for getting started:

  1. Use reference images: Whether it’s canon or custom, having reference angles helps – try using screen captures from your favourite movies or episodes, or check the internet for inspiration.
  2. Start with a base ship style: Choose your ship’s function first. Is it a single-pilot starfighter, a mid-size transport or a massive capital ship? Start with simple bricks to block out the shape.
  3. Focus on colours and textures: Most Star Wars ships use greys (remember, there’s more than one!), whites, dark reds and muted blues. Use plates and tiles to add greebling that mimics the gritty look of Star Wars ships.
  4. Reinforce your structure: Use Technic elements and hinges for sturdy builds – especially if your spaceship will be moved around often or in a high-traffic area.
  5. Be a savvy shopper: Don’t have every piece in your stash? No problem. At BrickResales, you can fill a bag with pre-loved bricks in our Coopers Plains showroom or shop online to find everything you need. Bonus tips: Check back on our online story every day, as we’re always adding new parts. And follow us on Facebook for the daily highlights!

Ideas for Star Wars dioramas and battle scenes

Once you’ve built your ship, it’s time to set the scene. Dioramas are a great way to show off your builds and tell a story.

Try these ideas:

  • Death Star Hangar Bay: Perfect for docking your TIE Fighters or staging a daring Rebel infiltration.
  • Tatooine sand scene: Use tan bricks, mini moisture vaporators and a Jawa or two for an authentic desert skirmish.
  • Hoth Base battle: White plates, AT-ATs, snowtroopers and blaster effects make this a dramatic diorama with big visual impact.
  • Outer space showdown: Mount ships using transparent pieces to simulate flying – mid-air laser blasts are the cherry on top.
  • Starfield backdrops: Add black plates as a backdrop, or build them into a shadowbox, with pinprick stars or light-up LEDs.

May the bricks be with you…
